Summary: This article is an attempt to trace the difficult process of modernization of Bulgarian cultural diplomacy in Western Europe during the second half of the 20th century and to point out the main factors that influenced this evolution. The different periods of this modernization and their most important characteristics are discussed and some terminological clarifications are proposed. The focus is on the strong dependence of cultural diplomacy on the international climate and on bilateral relations with Western European countries.
