Summary: The article examines the Bulgarian historical publications devoted to the history of the Republic of Turkey and the way in which the scholarly presentation of the questions of the founding, proclamation and modernization of the Turkish nation-state affect the perception of the peculiarities of Turkish political and social life in Bulgaria. Most of the publications of Bulgarian authors so far can be systematized into several thematic circles, related first of all to the establishment of the Turkish Republic, the ideology of Kemalism and the personality of its first president – Mustafa Kemal. Secondly, we should mention the publications devoted to the development of Bulgarian-Turkish relations and the related issue of minority and refugee problems in bilateral relations. Last but not least, Bulgarian historiography pays attention to Turkey’s Balkan policy and the role of Turkish diplomacy in inter-Balkan relations, mainly in the period between the two World Wars. So far, only isolated examples can be given of studies by Bulgarian authors devoted to the country’s domestic politics from the proclamation of the republic in 1923 to the most recent times. The same observation is valid as far as Ankara’s foreign policy is concerned in a broader perspective, going beyond the issues of inter-Balkan relations.

Keywords: Bulgarian historiography, Turkish Republic, Kemalism, Bulgarian-Turkish rela¬tions
