Summary: Today, the Holocaust has a central place in the historical interpretation of World War II. The aim of this study is to trace the main points in the development of Western historiography related to the research on the fate of European Jews, and to show how the Holocaust went from being a marginal topic, not even talked about much in the first post-war decades, to such an “elevation” above all other events and processes in the history of the war.
