Summary: The article analyzes the problems and prospects for the development of American Studies in Bulgaria at the end of the 20th – early 21st century. The factors that contributed to its emergence and development as a field of humanities during the Cold War are highlighted in the study. Among them Washington’s efforts to promote American Studies abroad as part of its “soft power” and the favorable international environment as a result of the process of Détente in the second half of the 1970s should be mentioned. Additionally, the need to improve the image abroad of history studies in Bulgaria in the circumstances of the country’s deteriorating international image in the early 1980s is highlighted. Special attention is paid to Bulgarian scholars and their research on the history of the United States.
