Summary: The study presents one of the most prominent Russian orientalists, who is considered the founder of the Indological school in Russia – I. P. Minaev. His biography can serve as a testimony to the growing interest of Russia in the East during the nineteenth century.

The development of the Russian oriental studies, and of Indology in particular, by summarizing works or by the face of its representatives has been extensively studied in Russian historiography. This makes it possible to highlight both the continuity in the East studies in Russia and the relationship of scientific researches to the social and political life.

Keywords: I. P. Minaev, Indology, 19th Century, Buddhism
