Summary: The text tells about Bulgaria’s participation in three international conferences from the late 19th – to the early 20th century. These were the International Conference for the Social Defense Against Anarchists (1898) and the two Hague Peace Conferences (1899, 1907). The Principality consistently used its presence in multilateral forums to gain its national sovereignty and to emancipate itself politically from the Ottoman Empire. Methodically and purposefully, the government in Sofia and the Bulgarian delegates employed the policy of fait accompli in order to gain their independence. Forums that promoted multilateral understanding on various issues constituted an important instrument in establishing an equal international presence and status among other states.
