Summary: The establishment of 3rd Sofia for Boys State High School “William Gladstone” took six years. The high school was a vivid example of the modernization of education in Bulgaria. The main factor in choosing its location were the political struggles at the beginning of the 20th century. As a result, the school was built in the poorest and most populous neighborhood of Sofia at that time, Yuchbunar. Over the years, principals and teachers were selected according to the highest pedagogical criteria. The material base was built in accordance to the best opportunities of the time and met the international standards for a modern high school building. The school consisted of a complex of buildings covering 13.5 acres and occupying an entire neighborhood bordered by the streets Pirotska, Strandja, Tsar Simeon and Sredna Gora. Thus, the 3rd Sofia Male High School became the largest school on the Balkans at the beginning of the 20th century.
