Summary: The article examines Bulgarian female education during the 19th century until the Liberation of Bulgaria (1878). The education of girls is part of the movement for Bulgarian education during the era of the Bulgarian National Revival, as well as part of a broader process of modernizing women and their social roles in a new age. The article traces the stages and specifics of the development of Bulgarian female education during the 19th century, and analyses the factors, that contributed to this development. The author highlights the contribution of leading educationalists, writers, publishers and donors to the development of female schools. The focus of analysis is the public discussion about women’s education, that took place in the Bulgarian press during the 19th century, alongside the development of female education. The article also examines the specific aspects of female education, that have contributed significantly to the modernization of Bulgarian society.
