Summary: This scientific report aims to demonstrate the technological approaches to modernizing flintlock firearms in artisanal conditions. The prerequisites for this in Panagyurishte are a highly developed proto-industry and highly skilled craftsmen. The flintlock mechanism was considered an unsurpassed technical marvel and dominated the production of firearms for almost 250 years, until the first half of the 19th century. Significant changes in this field occurred after 1801 when the priest Alexander Forsyth discovered that mercury fulminate could be used effectively as an initiating substance instead of gunpowder. The discovery led to the widespread use of copper percussion caps containing fulminate by the mid-19th century. This article thoroughly examines and describes 12 firearms from the Historical Museum in Panagyurishte that bear clear signs of modernization from flintlock to percussion.
