Summary: The article analyzes the travelogues dedicated to Bulgaria “Two Days in Bulgaria” by Nikola Andrić and “Road: Belgrade – Sofia – Constantinople” by Marijan Alkovic. In line with the new cultural and value hierarchies entering the society, with the need to create new community identifications, the considered texts from the beginning of the 20th century are a reflection of the figure of the traveler, which has become increasingly multiplicity, combining within itself the writer, publicist, the researcher and politician. At the same time, they are also a valuable document about the dynamics of the modernization processes among the Bulgarians and Croats at the beginning of the 20th century, the result of the interaction between the spiritual traditions of the peninsula, European and non-European routes and the finding of their own language for the national cultures.

Keywords: travelogues, Croats, identity, otherness, modernization
