Summary: Based on data from the funds of the Russian State Naval Archive and the Historical Museum – Batak, the article carries out a historical reconstruction of the biography and naval career of Dimitar Chuchulev, who was a full orphan from the Batak massacre (1876). Being taken to the Russian Empire as a child, he changed his name to Dmitry Chuchugin, graduated from the Technical School at the Naval Department in Kronstadt and the Naval Academy in St. Petersburg, and as a naval officer fought in the Russo-Japanese War and the First World War. Using the biographical research method helped reconstruct the career of Captain Chuchugin. The article highlights the exceptional success of the training and career of the former orphan from Batak in the Russian Imperial Navy, interrupted by the Civil War in Russia.
