Summary: Wars are the worst calamity that people can inflict on each other, this is the reason why they have always attracted public interest. We learn information about them not only through texts, but also with the help of photography – impactful material that should not be neglected.

The first military-themed pictures were taken during the Crimean War. Roger Fenton was the first photographer to photograph the war. Fenton did not depict the casualties and destruction, but mostly British, French and Ottoman officers in uniform. The article presents photographs related to the Russo-Turkish War of Liberation, and the wars of national unification, i.e. the Balkan Wars and the First World War. The photos show the soldiers at the front, the devastation of the war, the camps, etc. as well as the participation of Tsar Ferdinand and his sons in the wars. The photographs stored at the Bulgarian archives and the photographs published in the press can be a very interesting and correct source of information about military history.

Keywords: photography, war, Balkan Wars, First World War, Crimean War, Russo-Turkish War
