Summary: Until recently the historical maps employed in Bulgaria for both scientific and educational purposes were all exclusively printed materials. The rapid development and proliferation of digital technology in the last decade, however, made it possible to introduce the so-called dynamic digital maps, starting with the first uploads to the Active Historical Map website in 2018 and continuing to this day, all under the auspices of the eponymous foundation. Every map on the website is executed to the highest technical and academic standards, owing to the participation of several notable Bulgarian historians (many of them members of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences) as well as a number of highly qualified specialists (cartographers, programmers, etc.). This article examines the emergence, development, and characteristics of these maps, making the argument that their publication marks a new stage in the development of Bulgarian historical cartography whose full potential we are only just beginning to explore in earnest.
